- The eldest son of the second Koisaburo Nishikawa, the third director of The Nishikawa School was born in Nagoya in 1939. He studied dance under his father's tutelage, first performing before an audience at the age of three. At 16 he became a student of Kanjuro Fujima, considered the greatest authority on Japanese dance. He choreographed his first original dance at age 19 and has since created several hundred new pieces. In 1962 he won the Nagoya Pen Club Award for his original work "Yaeyama Tsubaki".
In 1983 after the death of his father, Ukon Nishikawa inherited the leadership of the Nishikawa School. A special performance celebrating his succession was given in Tokyo and featured many Kabuki and Odori artists honoring the beginning of his career as headmaster.
Under his guidance, the school has established itself as one of the leading authorities on traditional Japanese Dance. Its classic style of Odori is taught throughout Japan. With over 5000 licensed instructors, its enrollment has grown to over 50,000.
In addition to serving his Japanese audiences, Ukon founded Nishikawa Kai, a foundation with the mission of making traditional Japanese dance known to more people. In 1984 Ukon led the first Odori U.S. tour and has followed since with tours to the U.S. and to Europe.
At present Ukon resides in Nagoya where he choreographs, performs and oversee the education of his students. his wife and three children are all Odori artists.
| 1939年6月4日 西川流二世家元、西川鯉三郎の長男として生まれる。3才で初舞台 1956年 西川流名取試験を受け、西川右近を名乗る。本格的に舞踊家として 活動開始。藤間流宗家、六世藤間勘十郎に師事。 1962年 自作・作舞の「八重山椿」で名古屋演劇ペンクラブ賞を受賞。 1981年 第34回より「名古屋をどり」を先代から引き継ぎ主宰者となる。 1982年 愛知県文化選奨文化賞を受賞。 1983年9月 西川流家元を継承。 1984年3月 「西川右近、三世家元継承の会」を名古屋、御園座にて開催。 特別参加として歌舞伎界から中村勘三郎、尾上松緑、尾上梅幸、尾上菊五郎、中村勘九郎らが出演。舞踊界から藤間勘十郎、藤間康詞、西川扇蔵、花柳寿輔、尾上菊之丞、音羽菊蔵、工藤扇寿、赤堀加鶴繪らが出演。 1984年11月 「名古屋をどり北米公演」 を行う。 1985年3月 モナコ公国キャロライン王女主催の舞踏会に出演。 1985年8月 （財）西川会設立。理事長となる。 1986年2月 「西川右近の会」を東京、国立大劇場にて開催。 1988年4月 ブロードウエイのプロモーター、ハロルド･ショウの招聘で（財）西川会主催「名古屋をどりアメリカ公演」を行う。 11月 「'88西川流家元〜西川会」を東京、歌舞伎座にて主催。 1990年11月 第2回「西川右近の会」を東京、国立大劇場にて開催。 1997年9月 第50回記念公演名古屋をどりを迎える。 日本舞踊家として数多くの新作舞踊劇を発表。「名古屋をどり」のほかに「赤坂をどり」（一部）「名妓をどり」構成・振付・指導のほか、過去に振付、ステージングなどを手掛けた他分野の公演は多い：東宝歌舞伎・長谷川一夫公演（出演も）、結城人形座（出演も）、宝塚歌劇団公演、平幹二朗「藤十郎の恋」「四谷怪談」、美空ひばり、都はるみ、五木ひろしコンサートなど。このほかラジオ（パーソナリティ）、テレビ（司会、ドラマ）、新聞紙上での対談、エッセイ執筆など幅広く活動する。 |
